The year that went by

The year of the Rat (as per the Chinese calendar) is over, and the year of the Ox is about to start.

A search on Wikipedia tells me this “The Rat (鼠) was welcomed in ancient times as a protector and bringer of material prosperity”. It also says the following about the characteristics of Rat, “Rat (Yang, 1st Trine, Fixed Element Water): Forthright, disciplined, systematic, meticulous, charismatic, hardworking, industrious, charming, eloquent, sociable, shrewd. Can be manipulative, vindictive, mendacious, venal, selfish, obstinate, critical, over-ambitious, ruthless, intolerant, scheming.”

Well, I think the world did see these characteristics of rat in play this year. We saw making of history in white house and also the rage of bear on the Wall Street. We experienced some of the biggest terror attacks and also survived them. The world is going crazy folks with the biggest economy failing, people losing jobs, recession in market, fanatics sieging luxury hotels and much more… I did a lengthy search on Google before I started writing this blog, and I was fed up of digging up stories filled with violence, hurt and misery. Seems like that either the media has planned to highlight only the worst doings of this year or that is the only thing that has happened in the last year. I dunno. The year has been a nightmare to many a people. I just hope and pray that the year of Ox brings wealth, happiness and peace to all.

To summarize, this is the year of Rat that went by:

Turn my mic up louder I got to say something
Light weights step to the side when we come in

Feel it in your chest the syllables get pumping
People on the street they panic and start running

Words on loose leaf sheet complete coming
I jump on my mind, I summon the rhyme, I’m dumping

Feeling the blind I promised to let the sun in
Sick of the dark ways we marched to the drumming

Jump when they tell us that they wanna see jumping
F**k that I wanna see some fists pumping

Miss something, take back what’s yours
Say something that you know they might attack you for

Cause I’m sick of being treated like I had before
Like the stupid standing for what I’m standing for

Like this war’s really just a different brand of war
Like it doesn’t cater the rich and the fan and poor

Like they understand you in the back of the jet
When you can’t put gas in your tank

These f**kers are laughing the way to the bank and cashing the check
Asking you to have the passion and have some respect

For a leader so nervous in an obvious way
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay

And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
In their living room laughing like “what did he say?”

In my living room watching but I am not laughing
Cause when it gets tense I know what might happen

World is cold the bold men take action
Have to react to get blown into fractions

Ten years old is something to see
Another kid my age drug under the jeep

Taken and bound and found later under the tree
I wonder if he thought the next one could be me

Do you see the soldiers they’re out today
They brush the guts with bullet proof vests away

It’s ironic at times like this you pray
But a bomb blew up the mosque yesterday

There’s bombs in the buses, bikes, roads
Inside your market, your shops, your clothes

My dad he’s got a lot of fear I know
But enough pride inside not to let that show

My brother had a book he would hold with pride
A little red cover with a broken spine

On the back, he handwrote a quote inside
When the rich wage war it’s the poor who die

Meanwhile, the leader just talks away
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay

And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
In their living room laughing like “what did he say?”

His hands held high into a sky so blue
As the ocean opens up to swallow you

His hands held high into a sky so blue
As the ocean opens up to swallow you

His hands held high into a sky so blue
As the ocean opens up to swallow you

His hands held high into a sky so blue
As the ocean opens up to swallow you

His hands held high into a sky so blue
As the ocean opens up to swallow you

His hands held high into a sky so blue
As the ocean opens up to swallow you

ETM all the way

Its exam time and exam is on my head. I ought to study, of course as I have an exam to write at 2 PM today. But here I am, sitting in front of the 15″ diagonal CRT at 6:30 AM and typing my 3rd post on my blog. So why am I not studying is the question, and like me, if you also are a regular final year engineering student, then you already know the answer.(You have to be a normal final year engineering graduate, not the nerdy types, but the normal ones to understand this.. :D ).

It is really hard to understand why a computer science graduate should study about management in an organization. That’s for management students right? Wrong, because tomorrow, you might land up being offered the position of some manager in the IT company you worked for, and you happily take the raise (who wants to crunch keys all his life), and it is then that this subject is of some help to you.
But that will happen when it is supposed to. Till then why are we not being taught core branch subjects and forced to remember what studies were carried out by Woodward and Aston, and what 14 points were given by Deming? Didn’t Maslow give five basic needs of a professional? Ask any VTU student (I must say am oblivious to plight of students under any other university. I personally think that the engineers from elite colleges viz. IIT and NITs are spared from the torture of this subject called ‘Engg. and Tech Mgmt’ aka ETM.), and he’ll say that none of our needs are being satisfied. The university at the same time is doing its best in applying McGregor’s Theory X to motivate us towards studying this and I already see Coercive power being applied on us.

I started typing this post in order to spend some time as I wait for breakfast to be cooked in mess, and I thought I will talk about studying habits of boarders. However, it turns out that I have too much of ETM on my head right now. Well folks, its exam time after all, and you can’t expect anything else from someone who has spent entire last night studying Peter Drucker’s 8 points because like any other final year student, he too just relaxes by daylight and believes in burning the midnight oil (literally of course).

All the best.

A boarder’s expression

I stay in hostel. Daily the mess opens at 7:30 in the evening and closes at 9:00 for dinner. For this one and half hour, the mess comes to life with the shouting, cheering and laughter of the boarders. The hall has been witness to many a jeering, fighting, caring, sharing and laughing. We literally live there. The one and half hours in mess is the outlet for our aggression against the warden, the college administration, politics or almost anything that could fire your mind. It has also seen everyone huddled together at a match of cricket on TV praying for India to win the series. It is the place to catch up on the latest gossip about almost anything around. The fun you have there as you pull your best friend’s leg as he is munching on salad, is nothing compared to any fun in your college life.

The mess is the place where you will see people lined up in queue as they wait for hot rotis with mobiles in their hands messaging at rocket speeds. Their hands move faster on their mobile keypads than a microprocessor as they stand there quietly, cursing the mess in-charge under their breaths for having wasted their precious study time during examination, in which they know that anyhow they wouldn’t have studied. Still blaming the mess in-charge relieves them of the guilt feeling. So they wait in endless queues fighting, jostling around as hot food is brought from the kitchen to the serving section.

This is hostel life man. You give a boarder 5 days to prepare for his examination and he’ll spend all his hours loafing around, going for movies, eating out with girlfriend and chatting hours at end on social networking sites. No matter what anyone would tell you, I have been here for four years and I know, its only the last couple of hours when we all seriously sit to study and it has always been what I like to call “a one night stand” with the university exams.

Talking of exams, I have one starting this Friday. Being a sincere boarder myself, I have not yet started studying for my university exams and I think its time for me to prepare for my tryst with the university assessments.

Hello world!

Hello World! Yes hello and hello is a polite way of greeting someone when you meet them. So here are my greetings to my friends in the blogging world.

Well, I never thought I would be here, but here I am and yes I am crunching the keys as I think what would make a good startup blog. To tell you the truth, I am a novice at writing, and though I have written some poems and some essays, I hardly find time and required interest to put my creative facilities to work. I beg my pardon, to the great community out there, as they read my posts as they might find my blogs unprofessionally written, or lacking in good humor or creative content, and also (I will try my best to avoid this) some typos. Some of you might even might them downright boring. Still, here  I am trying humbly to be one of you.

As I said before, I never thought I would be here, and I would not be here if it were not for my friend Chiranth. I read his blog yesterday and something inside me said I needed one too. He is a great guy and though he doesn’t know this himself (and may not even take credit for this) but he has been an inspiration to me for so many reasons. A great friend and a great person who keeps quiet most of the times. Sadly, I could never know him more and I am sure I just uncovered a part of the treasure that he is.

Now that I am in, I would try to make this venture a successful one and look forward to having a nice time here. Once again greetings to one and all.

C ya sooner. Bye.
